Live Photos: Breitling at Baselworld 2015 (with prices)
Mon, 06 April 2015 17:41
For 2015, Breitling introduces its B55 Connected pilot's instrument zdxpghms. used breitling watches houston. Also new are the retro-inspired Chronoliner, TransOcean Chronograph 1915 tribute watch, Galactic Unitime SleekT world time and Chronomat SleekT. In addition, the popular Navitimer, Colt and Bentley collection are extended with new models. Finally, an Emergency II update for our patient Breitling collectors. The Emergency II is now certified for sale in Switzerland and parts of Europe, but still pending US regulatory approval in the United States.

Cockpit B55 Connected
Since the definition of a "smartwatch" remains up in the air, Breitling prefers "connected" to describe its ultimate pilot's instrument since the brains of the timepiece are entirely in the watch. Breitling fans will immediately recognize that the B55 Connected is based on the Cockpit B50 with the added functionality of a pilot's flight logbook.

Notably, the B55 Connected does not run through the Internet. Breitling developed its own Swiss-made app through the same Swiss company that designs and manages the website for Breitling. The B55 connects to the Breitling app via Bluetooth to wirelessly upload flight logbook measurements such as take-off times, landing times, distance flown, top of descent, etc. In addition, the smartphone makes certain adjustments such as time-setting, timezones, alarms, display and operating parameters, night mode, etc. The data can also be shared with other pilots.

Similar to the Cockpit B50, the B55 also features a rechargeable lithium ion battery system that can be recharged via a power charger that plugs into a power outlet or USB port. The sophisticated battery system has a power saving function to conserve the battery life; meaning, the watch will hold its charge for one to two months. The 46mm titanium case is finished with black DLC coating. The new Caliber B55 SuperQuartz is a COSC-certified, thermocompensated quartz movement.

A brief demo of the B55 Connected was very promising, with Breitling currently doing R&D around several working prototypes. The app is also being refined with an Android-version in development. Although the B55 is currently a concept watch, when it eventually goes into production in late 2015 or early 2016, it will likely be priced around $10,000.

B55 Connected is expected to go into production in 2015/2016

Emergency II
As Breitling likes to remind us, since 1995, the Emergency has located over 20 people via its personal locator beacon. As the first ever wristwatch with a dual frequency transmitter, the Emergency II is both a safety and survival instrument. Although the Emergency II was launched two years ago, it took another year to clear government regulations to become certified for sale in Switzerland and parts of Europe, and the Emergency II is still awaiting regulatory approval in the United States. In addition, formal identification is required and a registration document must be filled out at the time of purchase:

Breitling Expospace B55
January 4, 2017
Fitness World
0 Comment

This is the year that real watchmakers are making smartwatches. TAG Heuer, Fossil and now Breitling, too. The Breitling Expospace B55, however, is a “connected watch,” which means it’s a traditional watch with additional smartwatch-like connected notifications. No, this watch doesn’t run Android Wear. Unlike TAG and Fossil’s smartwatch entries, this is a real chronograph watch with added digital benefits. It’s a trend that’s growing: connected Swiss fitness watches are already here.

We first saw this watch back at the Baselworld watch show in March, but the Exospace B55 is finally here: and it costs $8,900. Suddenly, the Apple Watch seems affordable.

The Breitling Exospace B55 is, according to Breitling, a watch that’s specifically designed for aviation professionals, with actual watch adjustments that can be made from the phone (time-setting, timezone adjustments, and alarms). It doesn’t have an accelerometer to track fitness, but it can receive smartwatch notifications that show on its two basic digital displays, showing notifications of emails, SMS and WhatsApp messages, incoming phone calls, and calendar appointments.

This type of watch-plus-notification tech has actually been around for years (Casio has had several G-Shock models that have experimented with it), but this is a high-end Swiss luxury watch that’s adopting the experiment.

“For us, using this technology was pure logic,” Breitling Vice President Jean Paul Girardin said regarding the watch’s development. “The key word “functionality” is very important, as well as precision…in 1995, we had the Breitling Emergency. It was equipped with a distress transmitter to communicate with a satellite. We didn’t call it a smartwatch yet.” Girardin was quick to remind me that all the features of the Exospace B55 were designed to be functional to a particular purpose, rather than simply added on.

I got to try the watch on briefly at Breitling’s boutique in Manhattan, and the black titanium case with rubber straps cuts a clean, attractive profile. This is a real watch. And yet, it has a rechargeable battery inside that runs its smart features. A magnetic charge cable powers the watch for two months at a time. The rotating bezel doesn’t serve a smart function: it’s purely for timekeeping purposes. Internally, a Bluetooth low-energy module keeps it connected with phone notifications. Would I buy one? Well, that’s besides the point. But it’s worth noting that this $8,900 watch is a fair bit more expensive than TAG Heuer’s $1,500 Android Wear debut.

The Exospace B55 pairs with a connected app on the iPhone, which can be used to sync lap times recorded on the watch, or to set certain watch functions. This is a traditionalist’s approach to smart tech: I barely had a chance to test the features for myself.

As smartwatches keep evolving and higher-end watches strive to find ways to compete with high-tech alternatives, this hybrid idea will be seen more frequently. Having a good-looking premium watch that also folds a few smart parts into the equation, and still feels analog, might bridge the gap better than shoving a smartwatch into a fancy case. Traditional watch manufacturers will have to decide whether it’s best to help design a smartwatch, make a traditional-meets-connected watch, or forgo any sort of smart stuff whatsoever.

Breitling Launches the B55 “Connected Chronograph”, and It Looks Promising
March 13, 2015 By Editor
First look…

Watch fans and technophiles, the new B55 from Breilting looks like something to get excited about. This could be the most exciting Swiss luxury “smartwatch” yet. It is definitely an admirable step into the highly dynamic smartwatch arena. Calling it “a new-generation connected chronograph”, Breitling has just unveiled what you might consider its version of the Swiss smartwatch. Connected to a mobile app via Bluetooth, the B55 caliber is a souped-up build of Breitling’s B50 caliber (superquartz with electronic multifunction chronograph movement with analog and digital displays) which debuted in 2014. My initial review of the functionality of this watch indicates that Breitling looks to have taken a very thoughtful approach to represent a luxurious yet practical Swiss-made smartwatch. And design-wise, it looks great, with the solid build and technical-look that so many Breitling fans love and admire so much. I’ve never considered myself a Breitling die-hard, but already I could see myself owning a watch like this.

Scroll down for a full photo set + a great explanatory video.

Breitling B55 Connected

I am wanting for more details, that’s for sure, though the video above presents a lot of nuggets of detail on the watch. First, you can see that there is wireless connectivity via Bluetooth. And while I was immediately wondering about battery life – it appears that there is ability to charge the watch through a cable that attaches to the side of the watch magnetically and USB on the other (still, some more details related to battery life are needed).

One of the features I found most spectacular is the time setting: change the time / time zone through the app, and the digital time is changed on the watch…AND so is the analog time. The hands are automatically adjusted! Very slick.

You can also see that it is very specifically geared towards aviation. My question in this regard is, does the functionality appeal to strongly to professional pilots, or will it capture the hearts and wallets of more casual users…or somewhere in between.

blackened titanium case, blue rubber strap

Early announcements from Swiss watchmakers show an orientation of their smartwatch functionality to what we see coming out of Silicon Valley, while still retaining the look of a mechanical watch. For example, Frederique Constant/Alpina & MotionX and their MMT platform tracks activity such as steps, sleep tracking, et al. Stuff that I don’t find particularly interesting. However, Breitling has taken a completely different — and much more compelling, I would argue — approach. As one of the largest Swiss watchmakers and one which positions itself as making “Instruments for Professionals”, the brand already well-known and respected for its analog/digital watches, and to now integrate them with a smartphone in this manner makes a lot of sense. Particularly for aviators, professional or otherwise, this could actually be a really useful pairing so long as Breitling is able to make sure its mobile app and software is as robust as the watch.

Since the main assets of a smartphone are its screen and its ergonomic interface, owners of the B55 Connected can use their phone to perform certain adjustments (time-setting, timezones, alarms, display and operating parameters, night mode, etc.). The result is a considerable gain in comfort and efficiency. Conversely, the user may also upload the results of various measurements (flight times, etc.) from the chronograph to the smartphone so as to be able to read them more easily, store them or pass them on. The new connected watch system devised by Breitling thus facilitates use of the chronograph functions, in keeping with the spirit of authentic instruments for professionals. The B55 Connected is also distinguished by its ultra-technical look, based on a titanium case with black carbon-based coating and a dial adorned with a blue wireless symbol. This original blue and black theme continues on the sturdy rubber strap.

The B55 Connected boasts a wide range of innovative functions that make it the ultimate pilot’s instrument, including an electronic tachometer, a countdown/countup system enabling a sequence of countdown and “long duration” timing (Mission Elapsed Time) operations, along with an eminently aviation-oriented “chrono flight” device that is useful in recording flight times while memorizing the take-off time, landing time and date. It is equipped with a particularly simple and logical control mode, involving function selection by rotating the crown, and activation/deactivation by means of two pushpieces.

Now this, I like. Nicely done, Breitling. I am impressed and think this is a very solid “V1” from Breitling in the highly dynamic smartwatch arena. Exciting to see where this goes. Next step would be to see how it fares under some real world, hands-on use! Any pilots out there with initial thoughts/reactions? Please comment!
